  • What is it you want framed?
  • The type of moulding, colour, width, look, etc. example. black mat flat corporate look. 30 mm wide.
  • Size
  • Number required
  • Is mat board required?  Greatly adds to look of framed works on paper (posters, prints, certificates, photographs, etc), substantially improves design look.  Adds to cost both by cost of matt board, labour and makes the finished framing job larger by the size of the matboard.  Used to separate glass from coming into contact with the art work, photography, etc being framed; eliminates transfer of art work onto glass and minimises any foxing on artwork caused by moisture trapped between glass and artwork.  Valuable items or items of value to you if on paper should always have a matboard to protect it.
  • Mounting down.  Items of little value, posters, advertising material, etc on thin paper should be mounted down to eliminate any cockling of paper particularly in times of high humidity.  Commercial advertising material should always be mounted down nothing looks worse in store promotional framing if work does not lie absolutely flat.
  • Items of value, original art work, etc should never be mounted down.   You learn to live with minor variations in paper flatness on items of value.
  • Types of glass:

Normal  picture framing glass. Excellent quality glass minimum distortion. Used in over 90% of framing jobs.

Non reflective glass. dearer. has diffusers through glass to minimise amount of sunlight or bright light reaching framed work however very slightly diffuses image being framed.  Minimises mirror effect.

Conservation glass. Very good glass providing very good protection for important or valuable art work.

Museum glass.  The very best.

Picture framing acrylic.  Doesn’t break. Good for sending interstate, overseas, etc. unlike normal acrylic, does not cause distortion when viewing.

UV.picture framing acrylic.  Doesn’t break. Excellent protection, minimises effect of light and sun on item framed.  Good for sending interstate, overseas, etc.
