Floating frames have become more and more popular over the last few years. The big benefit of using a floating frame on your canvas artwork is that the frame will not encroach on the image (canvas) at all. You can still see all the face of the image and the frame is just around the outside of the edge of the canvas.
You can add a small gap around the outside of the canvas and the edge of the frame this gives the painting a shadow around which can look very effective.
The other benefit of the floating frame is that it will cover the unpainted edges of the canvas which if left can look unfinished.
